A married couple from Derby, a city in England, managed to set a new world record in the Guinness World Record for the fastest round-the-world tandem cycling category. The couple, Laura Massey-Pugh and her husband Stevie started their cycling mission around the world in June 2022 from the city of Mickleover in England.

Launching from derbytelegraph.co.uk, Laura and Stevie plan to travel 18 thousand miles or the equivalent of around 28.9 thousand km. The two cycles around the world on tandem bicycles, also known as articulated bicycles, have pedals and seats for two riders. They successfully completed their cycling trip around the world in early December 2022.

Launching from derbytelegraph.co.uk, this couple from Derby, namely Laura and Stevie, are required to complete their mission of traveling around the world using a tandem bicycle in 180 days if they want to break a new record at the Guinness World Record. This means they have to cycle more than 100 miles or the equivalent of 160 km per day every day for 180 days.

Laura and Stevie made it to Canada last October and immediately resumed their cycling journey on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at around 7.30am Canadian time. They continued their journey from a location just north of Winnipeg. In making this trip, they have to fight the cold air which presents temperatures around -10°C, and only stop to rest once a day.

Cycling the streets and crossing continents on flights means this husband and wife must catch up on the miles on the days they spend on flights. The not only adrenaline rush, but cycling trips around the world also make them have to go through various obstacles.

The obstacles they face are quite diverse and draining and even physically harmful. Starting from experiencing stomach pain when they were in India, being thrown from their bicycles because they were hit by a beetle motorbike rider in Malaysia, to VISA problems in Azerbaijan. Not only that, they even celebrated their anniversary and wedding anniversary on the street.

Passing Various Challenges

Even so, the two of them managed to raise as much as 5000 EUR for three charities namely Sustrans, Mind, and Vetlife through donations in honor of the mega ride they did. During this cycling trip around the world, Laura explains this grueling adventure.

She said that her tandem cycling adventure around the world with her husband was fun, but there was no denying that they had to go through a lot of tests. Nearing the end of her travel mission, Laura said she and her husband couldn't wait to get home and meet their friends, family, and dog.

"It (cycling adventure) is very difficult. We thought we would have more time to stop and enjoy the culture of a different country a little. But many things make us tired and lack energy. We have to go back to a few places to see things that we missed when we weren't in a race against time," Laura said, quoting from derbytelegraph.co.uk.
